October 18, 2017, the main topic of discussion in the meeting was how to spend the fundus that CSAC has accumulated.  With budget issues at the state level, CSAC funding is in jeopardy since the council hasn't been spending the money they've been allocated every year.  the council has been given a deadline of June 30, 2018, to committee funds to projects.  We are meeting to discuss proposals.

November 19, 2014, approximately 1,000 pounds of food is being composted. The compost is usable for non-human contact fertilizer such as hay fields; the Sustainability office is pursuing contractual arrangements. In order to control pests the compost pile is covered with a foot of soil. Funding was provided to a MSU graduate student to produce a 2-minute sustainability film to be shown during new student orientation.

October 15, 2014, topics discussed included MSU being a proposed off-site carbon sequestration site by growing trees and selling them to California, looking into ways to compost food waste from the dining halls, and increasing active transportation i.e. walking and biking.

May 28, 2014, funded a video for student orientation, working on sustainability efforts, food services using more local products, Miller Dining Hall is getting around 200 pounds of cans as part of their recycling efforts and is encouraging the other dining halls to increase their recycling efforts.

March 19, 2014, introduced Nicole Morgan the new Montana Made Coordinator. Spearheading the use of locally grown foods in dining halls.

February 12, 2014, deciding how and where to invest funds in sustainability efforts on campus.

December 18, 2013, met and voted to add a second student representative to the Council, discussed energy efficient classrooms, reviewed fact sheets provided by Facilities Services regarding fleet vehicles, supplied funding to Habitat for Humanity and for students to attend a 4H environmental conference. The issue of recycling on campus was discussed. Senators encouraged CSAC to advertise and broaden recycle efforts.

September 23, 2013, raised our concerns regarding the facility vehicles they doing research and will give feedback soon, in conjunction with U of M they are trying to develop a sustainability certificate with Montana Institute on Ecosystems to facility it. The Council is drafting a letter to the President regarding the location of the new dorm.

July 24, 2013, topics of discussion were replacement of fleet vehicle with Rental company options, combining recycle containers into one container, and developing campus gardens.

April 17, 2013, reported that Tracy Ellig talked the group about lobbying the Legislature. She announced upcoming events: Earth Day, Campus Clean up Day, e-waste and glass recycling, and a composting pilot project. Senators noted that sustainability is getting multi-group events and programs and hoped that the recently hired Director of MSU Office of Sustainability would be able for focus and coordinate campus events.

March 20, 2013, co-sponsoring upcoming speakers Annie Leonard, The Story of Stuff and Chris Pallister, regarding debris washing up in Alaska. The Council had a presentation on Romney renovation proposals.

January 16,2013, announced that Kristin Blackler has been hired as the new Sustainability Director.

September 11, 2012, CSAC met per Kay. The group continued its discussion regarding trees that will be removed to make room for the new COB. 

August 14, 2012, CSAC met per Kay.  The main topic of discussion was the new College of Business building.  The new COB will be built to LEED certification.  Old growth trees will need to be removed to make room for the building, CSAC is recommending re-planting with trees equaling the carbon foot print of the old trees.  Senators noted that the 8th Street service drive access for Wilson Hall does not have the best egress and regress and may need to be restructured if it is going to serve both buildings.  The status of the suggested parking garage near the new COB is unknown.  Senators agreed that a parking structure needs to be a student lead initiative and agreed to encourage student leadership to support such a structure. 

July 18, 2012, CSAC met the 2nd week of July per Kay.  Topics of discussion included six geothermal test holes will be dug around campus, a sustainability office will be established with a full-time Director and half-time Recycling Coordinator, and usage of the open area created when the monopoly houses were torn down. 

June 20, 2012, as reported at the Staff Senate meeting  CSAC wants to include environmental standards for energy efficiency into the plans for the new COB.  Those standards will be the template going forward for water, waste, energy use, etc. on campus.  Several groups with common sustainability goals will be merging, they will establish a web site, hire a new director, and seek volunteers to work on service projects.   

November 9, 2011, as Reported at the November 16 Staff Senate meeting.    They worked on the Sustainability Plan draft and framework for this draft is estimated for the end of December.  The group will move forward the Climate Action Plan to University Council in January.  Senators discussed both small and large activities that can support sustainability on campus, which included a “where to start” web page and a way to make suggestions to this group.  Senators also discussed buying, returning, and recycling caps and gowns. 

October 11, 2011, as reported at the October 19 Staff Senate meeting.  The Council developed five work groups that will meet prior to CSAC meetings to improve efficiency.  Debbie will follow up on the creation of an Office of Sustainability.    

August 18, 2011, Campus Sustainability Advisory Council – Report to Staff Senate, the main topic of conversation was the Climate Action Plan http://www.montana.edu/sustainability/cap.html, they are requesting feedback through 8/22.   Also discussed was a state-wide ride share program

July 12, 2011, Campus Sustainability Advisory Council (CSAC)  – Report to Staff Senate – July 20th, 2011. Deb voiced concern that the CSAC website was not up to date and that no minutes had been posted since August 2010.  This did not help in trying to get the message out there.  She agreed to help out and get the minutes posted to the website while awaiting a new member from Communications that could do this more regularly.
ASMSU Sustainability Center
Gretchen Hooker presented a potential initiative to change the name to the MSU Sustainability Center or MSU Office of Sustainability or something similar.  This could facilitate a greater partnership between ASMSU, students and the administration.  Funding was discussed and strategies of introducing such a proposition to the administration.  Concern that it may be construed at a “back door” attempt at creating another office.  Discussion regarding opportunities for student scholarship/internships etc.  This Center/Office could help facilitate the individual efforts of various groups across campus in to a more unified message/approach.
Facility Services (Dan Stevenson) also announced that they were appointing a new member of staff (Resource Conservation Specialist) to work on energy/resources usage reduction across campus. She expressed concern that in a time of staff pay freezes and department cuts – was it really appropriate to be creating yet another department, when fundamentally the message of sustainability could be incorporated in to the mission of every department?  Does it need more/different staff to be sustainable – or simply a change in outlook/policy?
Question from last meeting: Facilities employed/contracted the services of an Energy Audit/Savings specialist last year – how successful was that, what was the outcome? Dan Stevenson stated that the outcome was not as positive as they had hoped or that it could have been, due to a number of issues; such as Facilities changes in staffing, and/or perhaps they were not the right company to perform that task. The process though did introduce the concepts of sustainability to Facilities and the campus, and so perhaps was an important first step to achieving a change in the way we use our resources on campus.

As reported last time - Climate Action Plan (CAP) – MSU has not met its commitment American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), but and extension was requested and is due to submit its Climate Action Plan by the end September 2011.  This draft CAP document is available for review on the website.  A formal review process of the final document will be available on 1st September, 2011.
Incorporating sustainability in to MSU’s Mission Statement.  It was agreed that the Council would offer recommendations to Jim Rimpau that sustainability should be included in the MSU Mission Statement.
